Our latest piece of concept artwork imagines a 1970s car race that never happened – or at least not in the way we’ve portrayed it.
The grandly titled World Production Car Championship which took place annually on the short oval tracks of South West England generally involved only local drivers, but we’ve imagined an alternative version in which overseas visitors were involved.
Our artwork for a programme cover, poster, and newspaper ad, shows an Abarth from Italy leading a more familiar Mini and Ford Escort.
The West Country’s production cars would soon adopt the title ‘hot rods’, which was used for these modified saloon cars elsewhere in the UK.
The World Production Car Championship was discontinued, and South West drivers were invited to compete in the World Hot Rod Championship at Ipswich – an event which at the time often involved visitors from Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, and South Africa.
What if the South West event had itself included a more cosmopolitan line-up, with the promoters using their connections to create an international competition? That’s what our retro artwork, created with our friends Screamprint, conjures up.
We like to imagine alternative designs – some previous examples include the 2023 Abarth National Hot Rod concept and a 1970s tourist postcard from the South Wales village of Hirwaun.
