Tracy-Ann Oberman’s highly acclaimed reimagining of Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice is back on tour in the UK, and our associate hyperlocal website Rhiwbina Info was at the New Theatre last night (Tuesday 18 March) to review its opening night in Cardiff.

Due to illness, Tracy-Ann herself was unable to appear in that performance of The Merchant of Venice 1936, but Evie Hargreaves (pictured) stepped up from the cast to play the lead role.

“There’s no denying the play loses something without her presence, but Evie Hargreaves deserved her curtain call last night for delivering a superb performance in very challenging circumstances,” wrote the reviewer Andy Weltch.

The play transports Shakespeare’s play to 1930s London, with fascism on the rise and the Jewish community under threat.

Andy added that it “delivers a powerful and memorable piece of theatre”.

It plays at the New Theatre until Saturday (22 March), when the play moves on to Southend, Birmingham, and Richmond.
