Our sponsored player Kelsey Gentles and her York City Knights team mates ended up on the losing side in the weekend’s Women’s Challenge Cup Final.
But, despite the 34-6 defeat by hot favourites St Helens, Kelsey was thorougly positive about the experience. She told us: “I’m very proud to be a Knight right now – we knew we would have a challenge on our hands at the weekend with St Helens being heavy favourites, but we just went into the game wanting to play a solid structure and give some of the less experienced York girls a taste of what finals rugby is all about.
“Obviously it is disappointing to lose, but credit to Saints – they are playing a great brand of rugby right now and they deserve all the accolades they receive! The future is bright at York and we are building something great over here to make sure we are at many finals to come in the future and win some silverware too!”
The game was a much more even contest than the score suggests, and the overall opinion was that the live coverage on free-to-air BBC was a tremendous advertisement for women’s rugby league.
