Our sponsored player Danni Wyatt helped Torquay United Women to their first win of the season yesterday (Sunday 18 September), scoring a first-half goal as the Gulls beat Poole Town Ladies 5-2 in the South West Women’s Premier League.
Danni scored Torquay’s second goal in the opening home fixture at their new Coach Road, Newton Abbot base, converting a pass from Ellie Bishop just moments after Emma Hunt had opened the scoring by heading home a corner from Ocean Latto on 24 minutes.
In the second half, Torquay extended their lead with two quickfire goals from Tracey Cross – the first from another corner by Ocean on 50 minutes and the second by hitting home a close-range rebound after Rhi Bailey’s 18-yard effort hit the woodwork to make it 4-0.
Holly Weaver-Coles pulled one back for the visitors before Ellie Bishop received a long ball forward from Kiara Robins and fired it into the roof of the net. Sacha Paynter scored a consolation goal for Poole with 10 minutes left to make it 5-2.
“It was a great result today for our first home game of the season,” Danni told us afterwards. “Three points well deserved and we were clinical in front of goal with most of the possession the entire 90 minutes. I was pleased to get on the scoresheet for this one!”
We first sponsored Danni in the 2017/18 campaign, when she helped Torquay to third place in the South West Women’s Premier League and to the final of the Devon Cup and won the goal of the season award. Last season she helped Torquay to a sensational victory in the Devon FA Cup Final and was named club player of the season.
Danni is due to make her 100th career appearance for the club this season.
