A new play by Ian Hislop and Nick Newman about the hugely influential comedy writer and performer Spike Milligan completes its UK tour this week.
Spike, starring Robert Wilfort, is playing at Cardiff’s New Theatre this week (22-26 November), and our companion hyperlocal site Rhiwbina Info was there to review its opening night.
The reviewer, our senior consultant Andy Weltch, described it as “a wonderful new play … as frantically fast-paced as The Goon Show itself and almost as funny. Which is very, very funny indeed”.
He added: “This is a brilliant tribute to a brilliant creative mind. It treats Spike’s mental health issues seriously, but refuses to go down the ‘tears of a clown’ route.
“… a fabulous feast of laughs about a very funny, very troubled man”.
Spike is in Cardiff until Saturday, when its UK tour ends.
