Our sponsored player Danni Wyatt has been appointed club captain for Torquay United Women, and yesterday (Sunday 10 July) she led the team out for their first game of pre-season.
Facing a strong Cardiff City Ladies, who play in the Southern Premier Division – the third level of the English game – Torquay lost 6-0, a respectable result for the new-look squad.
The match was played in scorching heat at the Centre for Sporting Excellence in Ystrad Mynach.
“It was a game against a very disciplined Cardiff squad,” said Danni. “We were able to expose our weaknesses with the intention of working on them and becoming stronger as a team. A tough test on a really hot day. The girls gave 100% and that’s all we can ask for on a 200+ mile round trip and 90 minutes in 27-degree heat.
“We’re just heading back into pre-season with a great retention list and some amazing potential in our new signings and prospective signings so the vibes are good in the changing rooms and it was so good to see all the girls again and spend time together after a short while away. I really missed my Sundays with them”.
Asked about the club captaincy, she said: “I’m delighted to be appointed club captain for the 22/23 season. It’s probably something I’ve been working my way toward for a while now and I’m just so happy the management feel confident allowing me to step into the role. Looking forward to seeing how the rest of our pre-season unfolds and I feel everything is heading in the right direction.”
Last week we announced we will again be sponsoring Danni for the 2022/23 season. We first sponsored her in the 2017/18 campaign, when she helped Torquay to third place in the South West Women’s Premier League and to the final of the Devon Cup. She also won the goal of the season award.
In 2020, she was among our friends who featured in the popular comedy promo video With a T, and last season she helped Torquay to a sensational victory in the Devon FA Cup Final and was named club player of the season.
Danni is due to make her 100th career appearance for the club this season.
